AARAMBH
OUR PEOPLE
The success of AARAMBH is the result of our staff of dedicated and committed men & women who choose
to participate in this venture. Our staff is drawn from local communities, and after obtaining the requisite
training, has joined the organization.
SHOBHA MURTHY: Ms. Murthy is the Founding Trustee and Director of AARAMBH. Armed with a
Bachelors degree in Commerce from the University of Bombay, and Ms. Murthy joined USAid in India. As
part of this job, she travelled through some of the most remote and neglected parts of the country.
These travels gave Ms. Murthy a first-hand opportunity to see and understand the rampant poverty,
ignorance, and exploitation resulting from lack of awareness and education. She joined Child Relief and You
(CRY) to get more hands-on experience working directly for the underprivileged, before leaving to start
Aarambh. She also has obtained a Masters Degree in Social Work. Today, Ms. Murthy is in responsible
charge for overall and day-to-day activities at AARAMBH.
MRS. SIVAPRASAD: Mrs Sivaprasad serves on the board of trustees for AARAMBH. She is a
dedicated social worker and helps women of the community to come forward and discuss the problems
facing them and come to a meaningful solutions
SAGAR GAVLI is one of the many youth associated with Aarambh. At age 19, he has been with Aarambh
for over 8 years now – first as a student, and then as a volunteer. He works with us on a part-time basis,
focusing on children’s and rural programs, while continuing his college studies towards earning a degree.
Sagar’s story is typical of so many of our students and volunteers. His family came from a small village
about 150 miles from Bombay, and they lived in a large slum in New Bombay. When he came to us at about
age 11, Sagar was struggling to complete primary and secondary schooling. With our help, he completed
high school and enrolled in college. He volunteers with Aarambh as a way to give back to the organization
and the community. His biggest contribution to Aarambh is his ability and willingness to motivate other
educated youth to teach young children in their communities – especially in the fields of math and computer
applications.
Manjula Naidu is a 30 year –old single mother of 2 kids. Although a college graduate with a degree in
Arts, Manjula was a stay-at-home mother doing taking care of her kids. When our caseworkers found out
about her situation, we approached her with an offer to come work with us. We sent her to a local
organization for training and hired her. She is a full-time teacher with us today, earning a good living and
able to support herself and her family. We help her live her life with confidence and dignity, and she helps
us by teaching our kids.
KAUSHALYA is 45 years old, a typical traditional woman from one of the most backward areas of India.
She has never been to school. However, today she has motivated dozens of young women from the
community to attend our adult literacy classes. Kaushalya teaches women at our centers sewing and
embroidery, providing these women with the skills needed to earn small incomes
Dr S.S. RAO & Dr KUSUM SHENOY are volunteer-doctors who conduct regular health education
classes for mothers and health check ups fro the communities.
In addition to our staff, individuals from all walks of life volunteer their time to support AARAMBH and
our activities. We are grateful for their support and help.
